It's one of the most confusing problems a homeowner can run into: the air conditioner turns on, the fan is blowing, but the air coming out isn't cold. Morey Plumbing, Heating & Cooling, Inc. says this is one of the most common calls the company fields during San Diego's warmer months, and it usually points to one of a handful of fixable issues, not a dead system.
Morey Plumbing, Heating & Cooling, Inc. has served San Diego County since 2000, offering plumbing, heating, and air conditioning repair as a family-owned, BBB-accredited, licensed and insured contractor. "An AC that runs without cooling almost always has a specific cause," says Ken Morey. "The trick is figuring out which one it is before it turns into a bigger repair."
Common Causes of an AC That Runs but Doesn't Cool
A dirty air filter is the most frequent culprit, restricting airflow across the evaporator coil until the system can barely exchange heat. Low refrigerant, usually caused by a slow leak, is another common cause, and it's a job that requires a licensed HVAC technician, not a DIY refill. A frozen evaporator coil, often the result of restricted airflow or low refrigerant, can also stop cold air production entirely until it thaws. Less commonly, a failing compressor, a broken fan motor, or a bad capacitor can keep the system running while doing little actual cooling.
When AC Maintenance Prevents the Problem, and When You Need AC Repair
Many of these issues are preventable. Routine AC maintenance, including filter changes, coil cleaning, and refrigerant level checks, catches small problems before they cause a full breakdown. Homeowners who skip annual tune-ups are more likely to be the ones searching "AC repair near me" in the middle of a heat wave, when appointment slots are tightest and the strain on an already struggling system is at its worst. If a system is still blowing warm air after a filter change, it's time to call for air conditioning repair rather than keep troubleshooting.
When to Consider Air Conditioning Installation Instead of AC Repair
Not every AC that's running but not cooling is worth repairing. Systems older than 12 to 15 years, especially those still using phased-out R-22 refrigerant, often cost more to keep patching than to replace outright. A technician can walk through the numbers during a service call and explain when air conditioning installation makes more financial sense than another repair bill. Morey Plumbing, Heating & Cooling, Inc. backs its installation work with warranties of up to 10 years on labor and equipment and offers free estimates with no obligation.
Frequently Asked Questions About AC Airflow Without Cooling
Is it safe to keep running my AC if it's not cooling?
Generally, no. Running the system while it's low on refrigerant or iced over can strain the compressor, which is the most expensive component to replace. It's better to switch the unit off and schedule air conditioning repair rather than letting it keep cycling.
Can I fix a frozen AC coil myself?
Turning the system off to let it thaw is safe, but the underlying cause, often low refrigerant or restricted airflow, needs a licensed HVAC technician to resolve.
