It Takes 8.3 Seconds to Load a Typical Ontario Trade Website. More Than Half of Visitors Leave After 3.

The November edition of the Ontario Trades Web Index measured 1,277 trade and service websites across 48 Ontario towns, and 93% take longer than 3 seconds on a phone, past Google's 2.5-second mobile guideline. OrbitWeb launches WebCore, an AI that runs and improves business websites, from $99 a month.

CAMBRIDGE, ON (Nov. 2, 2026) - Nearly every local trade website in Ontario is too slow for the people trying to hire from a phone. The November edition of the Ontario Trades Web Index, released Nov. 1 by Cambridge-based OrbitWeb, measured 1,277 websites run by plumbers, HVAC companies, roofers, dentists and other service businesses in 48 towns. 93% took longer than 3 seconds to show their main content on a phone, past Google's 2.5-second guideline. The median took 8.3 seconds.

It isn't a few bad sites. The median site scored 60 out of 100 on Google's mobile test, and only 6% reached the 90 that Google rates as good.

WordPress runs 79% of the 884 sites whose platform could be identified from the page itself.

Speed isn't the only gap. 49% of the sites carry no business schema, the structured data that tells Google and AI assistants a company's address, hours and services. And slow pages cost customers: a 2016 Google study found that 53% of mobile visits are abandoned when a page takes longer than 3 seconds to load.

"Most owners pay thousands for a website, and then it just sits there. Every single change is a quote and a wait," said Rigo Guadron, founder and CEO of OrbitWeb. "We built WebCore to put an actual worker inside your site. Text an update from your truck, counter a competitor's promo at 4 a.m., or get emergency calls captured while you sleep: your agent takes the job and gets to work immediately."

OrbitWeb's view is that the new wave of AI site builders hasn't closed the gap for local trades. Tools like v0, Lovable and Bolt can produce a fast front end in minutes. But the site still needs structured data, an llms.txt file, hosting, and someone to answer leads after hours. WebCore imports sites built with those tools and adds that missing production layer.

What WebCore does:

  • Owners request changes by text message from their phone, and the agent makes them. In the office, WebCore Studio shows each change as it's built.

  • SEO Lighthouse writes the fixes search engines and AI assistants look for: business schema, meta tags, sitemaps and llms.txt. They go live when the owner publishes.

  • Ghost-Writer interviews owners and field technicians about real jobs and turns those stories into articles, so the site isn't filled with generic AI text.

  • A 24/7 site chat answers visitors after hours and sends leads to the team's pipeline.

Plans start at $99 a month with no long-term contract. Migration from WordPress, Wix or Squarespace starts at $1,500 for up to 20 pages and keeps existing page addresses and design, so search history carries over.

About the Ontario Trades Web Index

The Index measures the home pages of publicly listed trade and service businesses found through local search in Ontario towns, testing mobile load time and page quality. No business is ever named. Figures based on fewer than 10 sites aren't reported, every figure carries its sample size, and earlier editions stay online so past citations can be checked.
